Melissa Strong: Owner, Director, & Head Instructor

MelissaStrong Owner/DirectorMelissa Strong has been a dancer, choreographer, and teacher for 30 plus years. She founded the 5678! Dance Studio in North Sioux City, South Dakota in the summer of 2000 with 40 students. Melissa’s studio has now expanded to over 300 students. This is also her 19th year as the head coach for the Dakota Valley High School Dance Team. Melissa has helped the Dakota Valley Dance Team win their Seventh State Championship Honors this year. Melissa was the head dance coach at Morningside College from 2008-2010. Melissa has received several awards during her time as a dance instructor. She was recognized by Dance Spirit Magazine as being a Who’s Who of U.S. Dance Directors in 2004. She was also awarded Coach of the Year – Top Five in the Nation by UPA Americup in 2006, 2011, & 2016.  She was inducted into the DX Hall of Fame in 2015. Melissa graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa in December of 2000. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mass Communications with an emphasis in Broadcast News and a Minor in English. Melissa trained at Siouxland Movement Arts Center in Sioux City, Iowa. There she studied Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, and Tap. She also danced with Jazzin’ Co., a local jazz company, and Siouxland Civic Dance Association Ballet Company. Melissa taught for Siouxland Movement Arts Center as a substitute and full time teacher for two years. At the University of Minnesota- Mankato she studied Dance as a Minor and danced with the University’s Modern Company. Melissa was also a United Indoor Football League dancer. She now attends workshops and classes across the nation to keep current with the new dance styles and techniques. Melissa is married and has two children, Gracie age 13 and Bode age 8.

 

Carey Baczwaski, Dance Instructor

Carey graduated from Morningside College in 2011 with her BSN. The past 7 years she spent working as an ER Nurse, 5 of which she worked at The Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Carey obtained her MSN as a Family Nurse Practitioner, graduating from Clarkson College in December of 2017.  She works as a nurse practitioner in Dakota Dunes at the Siouxland Pain Clinic. She trained for 14 years at Siouxland Movement and Arts, taking classes in Ballet, Pointe, Tap, and Jazz. Carey spent summers growing up attending the Jazz Dance World Congress, The Pacific Coast Dance Fest at St. Olaf College in Minnesota, and attended Ballet Intensives in Des Moines. In High School she danced for the North High Dance Squad, on the “Blue Squad”, competing in pom, kick, and military. She assisted Ms. Netley and the Rising Stars for three years. She went on to dance for three years with the Morningside Dance Team and was captain her senior year. Carey began teaching at the studio in 2009 while she was coached by “Coach Strong” at Morningside. She was nominated by the senior team and awarded National Coach of the Year- Top Five in the Nation by DX Americup in 2013. She can’t imagine her life without the studio, the dancers, and their families and cannot wait for another successful season!

Rebecca Hebda, Dance Instructor/Head Ballet Instructor

Rebecca Hebda is a graduate of the University of South Dakota, where she studied Business Management.  She has been dancing for 15 years with the Academy of Dance in Yankton,SD.  There she took classes in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, character, dance team, hip hop, modern, and advanced technique.  She has danced in the ballets of Coppelia, Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, and the Nutcracker with Dakota Dance Association.  She has participated in many workshops across the country with the Omaha Theater Ballet, Ballet Magnificat, Dance Educator’s of America, The Joffrey Ballet Company, Broadway Dance Center, and Universal Dance Association.  And taken class from choreographers like; David Howard, Mia Michaels, Rod Howell, Hayley Cooper, Vickie Moore, Travis Wall, Mandy Moore, and Tracie Stanfield. Rebecca was a participant of the Yankton Dance Team for 3 years, and for one year was the Assistant coach for the high school dance team.  She assisted and taught ballet, jazz, character, and dance team at the Academy of Dance for 3 years.  This is Miss Becca’s 7th year teaching at 5678! and she is teaching classes in Performance Pom, Pre-Ballet, Ballet, Pre-Tap, Tap, and Competition Team.

Riley Meier, Dance Instructor

Riley Jo Meier is a High School English/Language Arts Teacher at South Sioux City High School and is the head coach of the dance team there as well. Riley graduated in May of 2015 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary English Education from the University of South Dakota. She is currently attending graduate school through USD working on a Master of Arts degree in English with a specialization in Literature and an emphasis in British and Medieval Literature. Riley has been dancing for 18 years. She started her dancing career at Sandy Keene’s School of Dance, then Dancing with Celeste, both in Sioux City, IA, and spent the next 11 years at 5678! Dance Studio. She has taken classes in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, hip-hop, pom, lyrical, tumbling, competition team, and technique. She was a member of the 5678! Competition Teams throughout middle and high school and performed at many competitions throughout the Midwest- including nationals in Minneapolis, Chicago, and Wisconsin. She has also competed solo routines throughout middle and high school. Riley was on the Dakota Valley High School Dance Team for all four years, competing in pom, jazz, hip-hop, and lyrical. She was a part of the first ever Dakota Valley Dance Team State Championship Team. She was also an assistant at 5678! Dance Studio throughout junior high and high school in many different classes. Riley was a member of the University of South Dakota Dance Team and competed at the National Dance Association College Nationals in Daytona Beach, Florida in April of 2013. Throughout her time attending conventions to stay current on all things dance related, Riley has taken classes from: Jaclyn Walsh, Mario Velez, Sarah Jo Fazio, Jessica Etzel, Jeremy Arnold, Billy Griffin, Bill DeRicco, Ashley Shaw, Caitlin Kinney, and Gev Manoukian, among many others. This will be Riley’s fifth year teaching at 5678! Dance Studio, and she will be teaching Jazz and Competition Team.

Kandace Preston, Dance Instructor

Kandace is an employee at South Sioux City High School. She started dance in Sioux City, IA at Barbara Jean’s Dance Studio and 5 years later started taking classes at 5678! Dance Studio in 2002. Since joining 5678!, she has taken many different styles of dance including Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Hip-Hop, Pom, Lyrical, Kick, Competition, and Technique. Kandace graduated from Dakota Valley High School in 2009; during that school year the Dakota Valley Dance Team won their first Nationals title in Hip-Hop in Minneapolis. Kandace is continuing her education at Northeast in early childhood development and special education. She has always had a passion for dance over the years since graduating and has helped out around the studio whenever an opportunity came up. She enjoys teaching Pom and our competition teams. She plans on attending a few workshops to learn about new things in the Dance world.

Marissa Proschinske, Head Tumbling Instructor/Dance Instructor

Marissa is a Lakeville, MN native. She began dancing at the age of 3 and continued on until her Sophomore year of college. Marissa also began competitive cheerleading in 7th grade and went on to earn 4 time all conference and 3 time all American titles. Her cheer team, the Panthers of Lakeville North, went on to take home 4 state championships and a 10th, 2nd and 1st place rankings at the national competition in Orlando, Florida. Marissa is currently a Junior at Briar Cliff university; she is majoring in Business and Criminology, with hopes of continuing onto law school. She is also a captain of their cheerleading team.
Marissa is the head tumbling coach and assists with competition teams.

Paige Tracey, Dance Instructor

Paige is currently a sophomore at the University of South Dakota majoring in Nursing. Paige has been dancing for 16 years. She started her dancing career at Central Dance Academy in Le Mars, Iowa. There she was on their competition team for 10 years, where she also competed solo routines as well. She has taken classes in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, contemporary, modern, and tumbling. Paige held the title of Miss Teen Chapter of 47 of Dance Masters Mid-America. She then competed for the National title in Orlando, Florida. She has taken classes from: Kenny Bell, Travis Wall, Cat Cogliandro, Bill Hotaling, Tammy Dyke, among many others. She has also received scholarships from workshops such as NUVO, Jump, and Manhattan Dance Project. During High School, Paige was on the Le Mars Community Varsity Dance Team for 4 years. She competed in the Iowa State Dance Team Competition along with the Iowa State Solo Dance Competition all 4 years. At the Iowa State Solo competition, Paige placed in the top 10 all 4 years and was crowned the Division 4 Solo Winner in 2014. Paige was also on her high school’s cheerleading squad all 4 years. Paige was chosen Captain of both the Dance Team and the Cheerleading squad her senior year. Paige was a University of Nebraska – Lincoln Cheerleader before she transferred to USD. Paige will be teaching tumbling and competition teams this year at 5678!

Kylie Christiansen, Dance Instructor

Kylie is a current student of the University of South Dakota where she is studying Medical Biology. She has been dancing at 5678! Dance Studio since 2003, taking classes in ballet, jazz, lyrical, pom, tumbling, and tap classes, as well as being a part of the All-Star teams. During the time that she was a member of the Senior All-Star and Open All-Star teams, she attended the Dance Worlds in Orlando, Florida from 2016-2018. Being a part of the All-Star teams allowed Kylie to also compete at national competitions in Chicago and Minneapolis. Throughout high school, Kylie was a part of the Dakota Valley High School Dance Team, and was a captain her senior year. This is Kylie’s first year as a head instructor at 5678! Dance Studio, and will be teaching Ballet, Tumbling, Performance Pom, and Competition Team!

Cassie Hansen, Dance Instructor

Cassie is currently a freshman at the University of South Dakota where she is majoring in elementary and special education.  She began dancing at the age of 6 at the Akron Dance Depot in Akron, IA.  At the age of 8 she began taking classes at 5678! Dance Studio.  Cassie has been on the competitive dance team since the year 2009.  Over the years she has taken classes for many different dance styles including: Jazz, Ballet, Lyrical, Hip-Hop, and Pom.  Throughout the years she has competed three duets and three solos.  With her team has competed at many local and national competitions all over the Midwest.  The past three years she has competed with the Senior and Open All Stars at the Dance Worlds Competition down in Orlando, Florida.  She has also been an assistant teacher at 5678! for many years. Cassie graduated from Akron-Westfield High School in 2018.  Throughout high school she danced on the Akron-Westfield Dance Team where she competed at the Iowa State Dance Competition all four years.  They competed a Pom, Kick, and Hip-Hop routine where they placed in the top three places all four years.  Cassie also competed at the Iowa State Solo Competition for three years, where she placed 8th, 4th, and this past year she placed 2nd in her class.  This is Cassie’s first year teaching at 5678! Dance Studio, and she will be teaching Pom, Jazz, Ballet, and Hip-Hop.

 

Callie Olson, Dance Instructor

Callie is currently a freshman at the University of South Dakota majoring in medical biology. Callie has been dancing for 14 years, all of which have been with 5678! Dance Studio. She was a member of the competitive teams for 10 years, as well as a competitive solo dancer. As a part of the Senior All Star Team, Callie attended the Dance Worlds in Orlando, Florida in 2016, 2017, and 2018. She was also honored as one of ten USASF Worlds College Scholarship recipients. While competing with the 5678! All Star Teams, Callie also competed nationally at competitions in Minneapolis, as well as Chicago. Callie has taken classes in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, hip hop, pom, and tumbling. She has also taken master classes from Kent Boyd, Amy Yakima, Comfort Fedoke, Gev Manoukian, among many others. In high school, Callie was a member of the State Champion Dakota Valley Dance Team for 4 years, and was a captain her junior and senior years.
